2015: ePIC & EDEN Partnership


We are happy and proud to announce the partnership established between ADPIOS and EDEN for the organisation of ePIC 2015. Both events will be collocated at the same venue, in Barcelona, with a one day overlap:

  • ePIC dates are 8-9-10 June while
  • EDEN dates are 10-11-12 June.

The European Distance and Elearning Network (EDEN) has the strength of more than 200 institutional members and over 1,200 members in the Network of Academics and Professionals (NAP) and its annual conference brings together hundreds of delegates from around the world.

The partnership with EDEN goes beyond the organisation of the ePIC conference as we are actively involved in two other initiatives: Badge Europe, where we are partners and Europortfolio, where we are discussing the option of creating a sustainable network of ePortfolio professionals, beyond the end of the project's funding in December 2015.

The two organisations believe that this partnership will greatly profit our respective communities and the learning and development professionals community at large.

The other important innovation for ePIC 2015 is the implementation of an open and collaborative authoring, reviewing editing and publishing process: the ePIC 2015 proceedings will be open proceedings. We already had a separate review for the abstracts (to select the presentations) and the papers (for the proceedings), which allowed papers to be published after the conference, encouraging authors to exploit the benefits of meeting peers to improve the content of their publication. Yet, the traditional approach to reviewing did not fully encourage collaboration. The technology at hand did not facilitate collaboration either.

After searching for a solution encouraging collaboration, we have the pleasure to announce a partnership with Authorea that will provide ePIC with the most advanced technology supporting an open, collaborative authoring, reviewing editing and publishing process. We are currently putting this service to the test for the 2014 proceedings — hence the delay in the publication as the partnership was only established this year.

ePIC 2015 will also be a landmark for the Badge Europe and the Open Badge Passport initiatives. More about this in this newflash.

We hope that this news will give you even more the desire to join us in Barcelona, 8-9-10 June, to explore further the potential of disruptive technologies in supporting transformative learning.

The organisers of ePIC 2015 invite authors and practitioners to submit contributions to the 13th conference on ePortfolios, Open Badges and Identity. The theme we wish to explore in depth this year is: disruptive technologies for transformative learning: under which conditions can disruptive technologies transform learning? Under which conditions can transformative learning impact our society, improve trust, empowerment, (self-) employability, social integration and civic participation?

We of course welcome all contributions related to the core themes of ePIC: Open Badges, ePortfolios, Identity and Trust.


While an increasing number of technologies are colonising education, work, social and cultural life, what is their real impact on individuals, communities and institutions? How do they contribute to the increase of trust, in oneself and others? How do they affect the construction of our identities, individual and collective? Are they assimilated into the old frameworks, or do they have a transformative or disruptive effect? What are the conditions for making transformation or disruption possible? What kinds of disruptions? Who benefits?

ePortfolios, Open Badges, MOOCs, Personal Learning Environments and Learning Analytics have often been labeled 'disruptive'. Does the reality support that claim? What can we say about the intentions of the designers and practitioners of such technologies?  Do they empower learners and workers (whether employee or self-employed), do they provide additional means for institutional control, or both?

To address this year's theme, authors and practitioners are invited to submit contributions in relation to a range of technologies and learning contexts:

  • Technologies primarily include (but are not limited to): Open Badges and ePortfolios, Social Networks and Personal Learning Environments, Learning Management and Knowledge Management Systems, Personal and System Analytics.
  • Learning primarily includes (but is not limited to): learning recognition and assessment, accreditation and certification, recruitment and self-employment, coaching and continuing professional development, communities of practice and learning organisations, social capital development and citizenship.

Where relevant, authors are invited to situate their reflection in relation to trust and openness:

  • Trust primarily includes (but is not limited to): networks of trust, risk and reputation management​, trust architectures and infrastructures, authentication and authorisation, privacy security and trust management.
  • Openness primarily includes (but is not limited to): Open Learning and Knowledge, Open Educational Resources, Open Source and Open Standards,Open Trust and Credentials, Open Resources and Processes, Open Data and Architectures, Open Business and Open Society, MOOCs, BOOCs and SPOCs…

* Once the abstracts are accepted, authors need to register as a presenter in order to be included in the conference programme.

Submission and review process

Submissions can include research papers, case studies, work in progress, position papers, workshops, presentations and posters. The ePIC 2015 proceedings will be published under ISBN 978-2-9540144-5-6.

The submission and review process is organised in two steps: 

  • Conference presentations: the selection of the presentations is based on the review of the submission of a structured long abstract (between 500 to 700 words). All abstracts are reviewed to assess the quality and interest of a presentation. When accepted, authors are invited to submit a short/long paper and register as presenter / co-presenter.​
  • Conference proceedings: the selection of the contributions for the proceedings is based on the outcome of an open collaboration and review process. The process starts before the conference and finishes 4 months after the end of the conference.

Organisation of the open collaboration/review/publishing process

The submission of abstracts and management of the conference (registration, programme, etc.) will be done using Conftool, while the open collaboration review and publication will be supported by Authorea. More detailed instructions are provided on the conference portal.


Badge Europe!

More European countries are emphasising the importance of making visible and valuing learning that takes place outside formal education and training institutions. Yet, despite a number of initiatives and recommendations on the recognition of informal learning (c.f. European guidelines for validating non‑formal and informal learning, CEDEFOP) there is a wide gap between the recognition of formal and informal or non-formal learning. Access to the recognition of informal learning is patchy and the outcome of the recognition process is  too often treated with suspicion.

The Badge Europe! initiative (acronym BEU!, pronounced “Be You”) reaches out to learners, citizens, educators, employers, public authorities and policy makers with the overall aim to create the conditions for:

  • Providing systematic access to the recognition of all learning, whether non-formal, informal and formal;
  • Increasing the transparency, trustworthiness and quality of the recognition of learning achievements;
  • Empowering individuals for more balanced relationships with institutions and authorities; and
  • Creating new opportunities for employment, social inclusion and learning  for all.

Expected Outcomes

To address those issues, BEU! will work towards the promotion of Open Badges as Open Credentials and of the Open Badges Infrastructure (OBI) as a trust infrastructure. Key actors from the worlds of education, work and policy will be invited to join Badge Europe's Steering Committee to lead the actions planed over 2014-2017:

  • Creation of an Open Badges European professional network
  • Open Badges initiatives to support learning regions and cities
  • Integration of Open Badges at policy level, in particular with the Europass initiative​

The Open Badge Passport Initiative


While Open Badges have been described as the “New Currency for Professional Credentials,” the true value of Open Badges is the trust they embed, the trust that badge holders receive from badge issuers.

The Open Badge Passport Initiative aims at establishing a native, distributed, open trust infrastructure based on a network of Open Passports that seamlessly issue, receive, share and display badges. Fully OBI (Open Badge Infrastructure) compliant and open source, the Open Passport  will provide users and organisations with their own data store and create the conditions for the emergence of new services through the provision of an open API (Application Programming Interface).

The Open Passport Initiative will address a number of issues elicited from the current implementations of the OBI:
* User unfriendliness — badges will be received and displayed with one click
* Power unbalance between issuers and holders — everybody will be issuing and receiving badges
* Data fragmentation — different data types will be hosted: Open Badges, xAPI statements, evidence and more
* Data exploitation — new services, trusted by the owner, will have access to the OBPassport through an API
* Data management — user-defined rules and policies will be enforced (a must have, for trust networks)

The Open Passport will provide social features, such as the creation of badge aggregations at group, network, organisation or business levels, the display of badges earned by friends in one’s activity stream, or the search for people with a specific badge, sharing evidence across passports.

Eventually, the Open Passports will empower their owners to create a new type of ePortfolio, a trustworthy and distributed ePortfolio/Passport.

Several partners of Badge Europe are actively working on this initiative and they have submitted an entry in the DML Trust Competition. The full DML proposal is accessible at:

  2. Symposia – these sixty-minute sessions will bring together a number of trigger papers on a similar theme to allow more detailed discussion and/or workshop activities.

Moving Beyond “One-Size-Fits-All” by Targeting Three Strategic and Transformative Approaches: Evidence-Based Learning; Personalized Learning and Holistic Outcomes Assessment.

The focus of AAEEBL 2015 will target learning cultures through eportfolios use to assure a good fit with evidence gained from personalized learning and assessed holistically.

Higher education is approaching a tipping point, moving from segmentation of learning experiences toward a more coherent structure of learning experiences that emphasize learner-initiated processes.  Another challenge involves creating ways to establish authentic evidence about learning and to yield data for improving learning and institutional outcomes.  In this context, we are part of a transformative moment in learning where monolithic approaches are being replaced with evidence-based and personalized learning paired with more holistic assessment practices.  

The goal of AAEEBL 2015 is to address three key targets for transformation that, if put into practice with eportfolios, can ease this tipping point in order to assure quality and recognize a variety of learning needs:

  •     Evidence-Based Learning
  •     Personalized Learning
  •     Holistic Assessment
